#TEAMWIT Takes on CrossFit Strength in Depth

#TEAMWIT is well and truly off to an impressive start at CrossFit Strength in Depth, Europe's first sanctioned competition. In a packed field of elite men and women, WIT athletes, Jessica Griffith, Jamie Greene, Elliot Simmonds, and WIT Training Coach, Josh Al-Chamaa are holding their own, with Jamie Greene tied for 1st and Elliot Simmonds in 2nd after 2 events.

In the lead up to events 1 and 2, we caught up with the team to get their impressions of the events structure as a whole, their aspirations for the weekend.

Jamie Greene sits tied for 2nd after taking second place in 19.1 (just behind Sara Sigmundsdottir) and commanding the field in event 2, in which the elite women went through 10 rounds of 4 bar muscle ups, 8 metre unbroken handstand walk, and 12 hang dumbbell snatches at 22.5kg

When asked how she gets prepared for a competition of this nature, Greene insisted that there is nothing special in the routine immediately leading up to a sanctioned event - most of the hard work is done in the weeks, not days, leading up to taking on a big competition.

Before taking part in the first elite mens event, WIT athlete Elliot Simmonds told us he was feeling good having done the 19.1 yesterday, and was preparing for the event by keeping focused on himself. He told us the important thing to do before an event is to:

"focus on the things you can control"

It’s clear this focus paid off as he’s currently second in the leaderboard. After the first event he emphasised the importance of the crowd in motivating his workout;

"it was easier to push today than it was yesterday because of the environment…it felt easier."

Currently sat in 6th place overall, Jessica Griffith told us that whilst she was here to have fun and see what she could do on the gym floor, she was dissatisfied with her performance in event two, particularly the handstand walks:

"there’s always room for improvement…the only way to get better is by pushing yourself out of your comfort zone…am I satisfied? No."
